5 held in UK for suspected plot to attack air base used by US

Five men were arrested in Gloucestershire, England, on Sunday morning on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks at an American military base. The police received a tip from a resident about three suspicious vans heading towards RAF Fairford. Armed officers swiftly responded and apprehended the five men, who were initially charged under the Explosives Act and for preparing a terrorist act. Their nationalities remain unknown. The investigation is being led by counter-terrorism police.

About 85 households were evacuated early Sunday due to fears the vans contained explosives. The local community set up tents and gathered at a nearby leisure center to stay together, including with their pets. Tractors, JCBs, and concrete barriers were erected in front of the military base gates to prevent further access.

The US Air Force at RAF Fairford expressed that their personnel remain vigilant and constantly reassess security measures to protect installations, personnel, and their families. US President Donald Trump praised the arrests, stating the suspects were "looking to do big damage" and called their apprehension "fantastic." He revealed that they had been under review for a long time.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards cautioned in July that any UK base used in strikes against Iran would be a legitimate target. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of an Islamist plot or Russian involvement in the case.
