2027 presidency: Umahi under fire over ‘not Igbo turn’ comment

Former Ebonyi State Governor and current Minister of Works, David Umahi, has faced intense criticism for his recent remark that it is not yet the turn of the Igbo to become President of Nigeria. Critics argue that the presidency should rotate between the North and South regions of the country, rather than among individuals. Umahi made the statement during a speech in Benin, defending President Bola Tinubu's administration against opposition from opposition candidate Peter Obi.

He also dismissed Obi's claim that he was not his match, questioning the criteria for such a statement. The Minister of Works downplayed attempts to portray the Tinubu administration negatively, highlighting infrastructure projects benefiting communities across the nation. Umahi acknowledged that the South-East would eventually have its chance to produce Nigeria's President, but emphasized that the current political moment belongs to Tinubu.

Critics, including public affairs analyst Adedayo Oluwatosin, accused Umahi of being insincere and scheming to gain favor with Tinubu, possibly for a future role as Vice President in 2031.
