2027: PDP guber candidate, Nnaji fumes as Enugu agency vandalises campaign office

In the 2027 Enugu State gubernatorial race, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Chief Godfrey Uche Nnaji, expressed fury after unidentified officials from the Enugu State Environmental Protection Agency (ENSEPA) reportedly raided his campaign office and removed his campaign materials. Nnaji accused the agency of violating his privacy and destroying materials used to decorate his office, fence, and surroundings along Abakaliki Road.

This act, Nnaji argued, was a blatant disregard for the pending court case questioning the state's signage policy. The PDP leader emphasized that such actions were "politically sad and unethical" and demanded that government agencies respect ongoing legal proceedings and the rule of law. The Enugu State Government had recently enacted legislation imposing a fine of N150 million for any political party violating signage regulations ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, opposition parties have contested the law's constitutionality, and the fine has been criticized for potentially conflicting with the campaign spending limit under the Electoral Act 2026. Nnaji questioned the urgency of the raid, asking why the enforcement action was taken while the court case was already underway. He argued that government authorities should exercise restraint when a policy is already before a competent court, allowing the judiciary to determine its legality rather than resorting to actions that might prejudge the matter.
