Zahid: Understand Constitution before branding actions ‘treasonous’ or ‘disrespectful’

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — Amid a constitutional dispute in Negeri Sembilan, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized the need to understand the institutions' roles and the Constitution before labeling actions as "treasonous" or "disrespectful," Berita Harian reported. The conflict centers on the responsibilities of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, menteri besar and state executive council under the Negeri Sembilan State Constitution.

Zahid stressed that understanding the Federal Constitution and respective state constitutions, as well as citizens' rights, is crucial before making such accusations. He urged leaders to clear up confusion through knowledge and wisdom while safeguarding the dignity of institutions. The Attorney General's Chambers has been involved in legal issues stemming from the dispute, and Tuanku Muhriz revoked the state executive councillors' appointments on September 20 under the state constitution.

Zahid stated that the dispute should be resolved through customary institutions and existing constitutional framework, while noting that Umno would not interfere in the matter. He made these remarks while officiating the Musyawarah Nasional: Membongkar Polemik Tanah Melayu in Melaka.
