World leaders renew commitment to pandemic preparedness

World leaders attending the United Nations General Assembly have reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing global preparedness for future pandemics. They emphasized the necessity of continued investment and international collaboration in pandemic prevention, readiness, and response measures. This commitment was expressed during the second UN General Assembly High-level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, which assessed advancements made since the inaugural meeting in 2023.

Countries shared their achievements in fortifying global systems for identifying, preparing for, and responding to pandemic risks, including the implementation of the World Health Organization's Pandemic Agreement and revisions to the International Health Regulations (2005). The expansion of global capacities has been achieved through the establishment of centers for epidemic and pandemic surveillance, pathogen sharing, and the local production of vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, underscored the importance of continued action and investment to maintain progress and bolster preparedness for forthcoming health challenges. He highlighted that COVID-19 resulted in over 20 million excess deaths between 2020 and 2023, causing economic losses of more than US$10 trillion worldwide.

Additionally, countries stressed the urgency of finalizing negotiations on an annex to the WHO Pandemic Agreement, which would create the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS) system. This system aims to ensure the timely sharing of potentially pandemic-causing pathogens and equitable distribution of vaccines, medications, diagnostics, and other health products derived from them.

The proposed annex is anticipated to be discussed for adoption at the World Health Assembly in May 2027.

The meeting also underscored the significance of global cooperation, robust health systems, and a One Health approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health in the prevention and response to future pandemics. Despite funding reductions, WHO reports that billions of people experienced health benefits in 2025. A recent UN report addresses the cycle of inequality and pandemics, while another report highlights the dire need for funding for health emergencies in 2026.

Furthermore, the WHO has lifted the global mpox emergency but calls for vigilance in managing the situation.
