Dating can be challenging for wealthy tech professionals who find themselves widely disliked. This sentiment was echoed by several unnamed tech workers who spoke to Wired magazine. One 23-year-old tech worker claimed that even mention of his job at Palantir, an AI surveillance and defense company, would immediately derail any romantic prospects, with potential dates questioning his moral compass and even describing him as the devil.

He now avoids discussing his employer altogether. James, a 29-year-old working at Tesla, reported similar experiences. Despite identifying as a "moderate liberal or moderate progressive," his dates often assume he is a right-wing extremist due to his employer. He believes that the perception of tech workers has shifted dramatically in recent years, with the tech industry now perceived as a hub of unchecked power.

Amy Laurent, a professional matchmaker, attributes this shift to the association of Big Tech with societal breakdowns, including AI, job displacement, wealth inequality, privacy, surveillance, content moderation, and political influence. The founder and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, is often cited as a prime example of this shift. Once seen as an eccentric visionary focused on sci-fi concepts and environmental initiatives, Musk is now widely viewed as a Trump ally, a government critic, a transphobe, and a misogynist. Despite this, many tech workers have not disavowed him.
