Watch: Sharjah driver runs red light, narrowly avoids serious crash

Sharjah police released a video on Tuesday, showing a driver who ignored a red light and narrowly avoided a serious collision at a busy intersection. The incident was captured by traffic cameras monitored by the Sharjah Police Operations Centre at night. The white sedan approached the intersection, disregarding the red signal, and proceeded straight through, cutting through active lanes. The video revealed the vehicle narrowly missing other vehicles attempting to turn across the intersection.

The footage, released as part of the police's road safety awareness campaign, emphasizes the dangers of running red lights and the consequences of such reckless behavior. Authorities urged motorists to be patient and obey traffic signals, warning that the few minutes saved by ignoring traffic laws are not worth risking lives.

The police reminded drivers to plan their journeys in advance, follow speed limits and stay alert at intersections. Running a red light can pose a significant risk to motorists, passengers, and pedestrians, particularly at busy junctions. Traffic signals are crucial road safety measures designed to prevent collisions and protect lives, the police stressed.

In 2025, running a red light contributed to 296 traffic incidents nationwide, according to Ministry of Interior statistics. Sharjah Police highlighted that this violation is among the most serious traffic offenses under UAE law, carrying a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points, and potential vehicle impoundment for up to 30 days. Repeat offenders risk harsher penalties, including longer impoundment periods and possible license suspension after accumulating 24 black points.

The police released a CCTV video to illustrate the dangers of rushing and urge drivers to keep a safe distance to avoid traffic accidents.
