'Trump Strait': US President renames Hormuz

On a map shared through his social media platform Truth Social, US President Donald Trump has officially renamed the Strait of Hormuz as the Trump Strait. This renaming came shortly after Trump declined Iran's proposal to reopen the vital waterway within a week's time. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had suggested that normal maritime passage could resume within seven days if the US accepted Tehran's conditions, which included lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports, waiving sanctions on Iranian oil exports, and observing a ceasefire in Lebanon.

Despite the Iranian offer, Trump expressed doubts about Iran's willingness to comply with the US demands, hinting at the possibility of further American air strikes on Iranian targets. This is not the first time Trump has considered US control over the strategic waterway; in August, he even suggested that the Strait could become a new US territory, citing the effectiveness of Washington's naval blockade.

The Strait of Hormuz is a significant chokepoint for global oil and gas trade, with nearly a fifth of the world's traded oil and gas moving through it. Disruptions in the region have caused considerable turmoil in energy markets and additional pressure on the Trump administration as the US gears up for midterm elections. Tehran's proposal directly links the reopening of the Strait to the end of the US blockade, sanctions relief, and renewed diplomatic efforts on Iran's nuclear program.
