Trump faces Senate test in Georgia, North Carolina as GOP candidates trail Democrats in survey

Republican Senate candidates Michael Whatley in North Carolina and Georgia Representative Mike Collins are confronting challenges as they seek to distance themselves from President Donald Trump ahead of the midterm elections. Both Republicans are lagging behind their Democratic opponents in recent polls, despite their close ties to Trump and recent appearances by the president in both states.

In North Carolina, former Republican National Committee chairman Whatley is up against Democratic Governor Roy Cooper in an open Senate race. A YouGov poll indicates Cooper holds a 11-point lead over Whatley among registered voters. Similarly, Georgia faces a tight contest between Collins and Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, with Ossoff leading 51% to 41% according to the same poll. Ossoff has been emphasizing the cost-of-living pressures for voters and the influence of Trump in his campaign.

Collins, a staunch Trump ally and member of the House Freedom Caucus, secured his Republican nomination after a contentious primary. He faced differences with Trump during the campaign, which may have contributed to his current polling struggles.

The pressure on these candidates comes as the Senate map expands for Republicans, with Democrats needing to gain four seats to secure a majority. Democrats are gaining ground due to voter concerns over the cost of living, Trump's approval ratings, and the Iran war. Several Republican candidates, including Iowa's Ashley Hinson and Michigan's Mike Rogers, have distanced themselves from Trump on trade policies and the Iran war.

Likewise, Republican-held states like Ohio, Alaska, Kansas, and Texas are receiving increased attention as the campaign enters its final weeks.
