Tinubu borrows like Shark, heads most ruinous govt ever in Nigeria – Atiku

Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has harshly criticized President Bola Tinubu's administration as one of Nigeria's most ruinous governments. Atiku outlined his concerns in a statement, highlighting the administration's removal of fuel subsidies, the rising costs of daily essentials, and the administration's continued borrowing patterns.

As of June 2026, Nigeria's public debt had soared to N166.79 trillion, according to the Debt Management Office, up from N49.85 trillion in March 2023. Atiku questioned why Nigerians, despite increased government revenues, continue to grapple with deteriorating living conditions. He demanded that Tinubu present a full account of the administration's economic policies, including the repaid and outstanding debts.

Atiku emphasized the stark contrast between the official narrative of economic recovery and the reality faced by ordinary Nigerians. He pointed out a growing divide between the populace struggling with soaring costs and the wealthy who benefit from the economic policies. Atiku warned that simply increasing government revenue, reserves, or official statistics does not equate to a successful economy, as it fails to address the immediate needs and living standards of the majority.
