Tenth woman found dead in South Africa’s string of killings

In a region east of Johannesburg, South Africa, police have discovered a tenth woman's body, raising alarm over a series of killings targeting women. The latest victim was found in the Tembisa township, though police have not disclosed additional details. Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed the grim discovery, stating that the crime scene is under management and that relevant authorities are present. The eNCA reported that the partially clothed body was discovered at a cemetery.

The nine preceding victims were predominantly in their 20s and 30s, some of whom were found disrobed and displaying signs of sexual assault. The initial victim, a 37-year-old woman, was discovered naked and restrained with cable ties on July 15. A suspect was apprehended two days later, and two more women, aged 31 and 38, were arrested in connection with the ninth victim and charged on Monday. Police suspect the case may have stemmed from a relationship-related issue.

South Africa, with its population of 62 million, grapples with one of the highest murder rates globally, averaging over 60 killings daily. The nation has long been plagued by gender-based violence, which remains a persistent issue despite government promises and the declaration of gender-based violence as a national disaster.
