Talensi Traditional Council bans unauthorised mining in the area

The Talensi Traditional Council has recently enacted a ban on unauthorized mining activities within the Talensi Traditional Area. This resolution, in accordance with customary law and Ghanaian legislation, requires prior written consent from the Council and a valid license from the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Authority. Violators of this resolution will face reporting to law enforcement agencies and potential customary sanctions.

The Council emphasizes its support for responsible, legal, and environmentally sustainable mining that generates employment opportunities for the youth and fosters development in the Traditional Area. However, they express concern over the recent surge in unauthorized mining, which threatens water bodies, sacred groves, and natural resources due to a lack of oversight.

They are particularly alarmed by the encroachment of unauthorized mining groups, known as galamsey, on farmlands, sacred sites, water bodies, and community lands without the Council's consent.

These unauthorized groups disregard customary procedures, bypass traditional authority, and contribute to conflicts and insecurity in the area. The Council aims to address these issues by enforcing compulsory customary consent, safeguarding sacred and protected areas, collaborating with state agencies, and establishing a community monitoring committee.

Led by President Tongraan Kugbilsong Nalegbegtang and supported by divisional chiefs, Tindanas, and queen mothers from the three zones, the Council calls upon all citizens, residents, and investors to respect this directive in pursuit of peace, security, and sustainable development in Talensi.
