#SHOWBIZ: Italian Film Fest: Moving drama on autism and ambition 'Siblings' comes to KL

Siblings, a heartfelt 2025 film directed by Greta Scarano, is based on the true story of a brother-sister duo who participated in Italy's Got Talent! The film, which also features the real Margherita and Damiano, won the European Film Academy Young Audience Award at the 38th European Film Awards 2026. Starring Matilda De Angelis as Irene and Yuri Tuci as Omar, the movie follows the journey of a family dealing with autism and ambition.

Irene, played by De Angelis, moves back to Rimini to take care of her older brother, Omar, who has Asperger's syndrome. Despite his differences, Omar dreams of becoming a gangsta rapper and performing opera. As Irene struggles to understand her brother, she encourages him to pursue his goals through a course on becoming an adult. The film balances humor and sincerity, using comedic elements to highlight the growing affection between the siblings.

The film was shot in various locations, including the seaside resort where director Federico Fellini was born, as well as Bologna and Rome. While issues like caregiving and the responsibility of taking care of a loved one are addressed, the overall mood of Siblings is lighthearted, with sunny scenes throughout. Irene delivers a natural performance, and Tuci's impressive debut as Omar leaves viewers hopeful for a bright future in his career.

Siblings is just one of six Italian films screening in Kuala Lumpur from September 26 to October 11, 2026, at GSC Mid Valley cinemas. Each film will be screened twice and comes with English subtitles.
