‘Respect sovereignty, security of Gulf countries’: China pushes back against US at UNGA

During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng urged the sovereignty and security of Gulf countries to be respected. He also called upon a "relevant country," presumably the United States, to cease threats against Cuba and lift the blockade imposed on the nation. This statement came in the wake of President Xi Jinping's recent US state visit, characterized by a warm reception from President Donald Trump.

Xi's visit included a rare display of camaraderie between the two leaders, featuring a military flyover and a state dinner. Chinese Vice President Han Zheng emphasized that major countries have a special responsibility to uphold international peace and security, calling for adherence to rules and the rule of law. He further stated that China holds the sovereignty and security of Middle Eastern countries, including the Gulf, to be respected.

The United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran in February, which led to Iran blocking shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The tension escalated further when Iran retaliated with strikes on American bases and interests in Gulf countries. China's Vice President Han Zheng also addressed the US blockade of Cuba, urging it to stop using force against the country and to lift the blockade and sanctions immediately.

This came after Cuba's electrical grid collapsed, plunging the nation into darkness and causing significant power shortages.
