Pregnant Woman Goes for Scan, Then Comes Terrifying Two-Word Diagnosis

TiLiyah Dawson, a 22-year-old from Georgia, received a terrifying diagnosis after giving birth to her daughter, Tyra. The routine growth scan revealed a rare tumor called a teratoma, which can contain bone, muscle, and hair tissues. While many teratomas are benign, large ones can pose significant risks to both the mother and baby.

Dawson's life changed dramatically when she learned of Tyra's condition, as the tumor had grown significantly and she was placed under anesthesia for an emergency cesarean section. Tyra's airways became floppy, requiring a tracheotomy and feeding tube. Despite the challenges, Dawson refused to lose hope and dedicated herself to Tyra's care, even traveling from a different city daily to visit her in the NICU.

After several complex medical procedures, Tyra has made significant progress, and her tracheostomy tube and feeding tube have been removed. In January, she underwent surgery to close the opening in her neck, and she is now beginning speech therapy. Dawson hopes sharing Tyra's story will inspire others facing difficult situations and shares her own aspiration to become a NICU nurse, inspired by her daughter's journey.
