Powerful storm pummels US Northeast

A powerful autumn storm known as a Nor'easter swept through the northeastern United States on Saturday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and potential major flooding. The storm forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights, affected tens of thousands of people without power, and posed safety risks in several major cities. New York, Boston, and Philadelphia were particularly in the storm's path, with authorities warning of possible road closures and significant inundation in low-lying areas.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani advised residents to stay indoors and avoid travel if possible, while the United Nations urged media outlets to clear broadcasting equipment due to strong winds. Several major cultural events were canceled, including the Global Citizen and All Things Go festivals in New York, and Oceans Calling in Maryland.

The storm is expected to bring up to 15cm of rain and 20-foot waves in some areas, with strong wind gusts up to 105km per hour along the New England coast. This is the first Nor'easter in 14 years to cancel events in the region. The storm comes after a Nor'easter in the earlier this year disrupted flights and left thousands without power, during a recovery from a devastating winter weather system.
