New GWM Tank 500 can fight Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner on power and value

The GWM Tank 500, once a dismal seller with a turbo petrol engine, has undergone a significant transformation. GWM has replaced it with a 3.0 litre turbodiesel version that now competes directly with the Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner in terms of power and value. This new diesel-powered Tank 500 comes in three variants, starting at R849,900 for the 4×2 Super Luxury, R929,900 for the 4×4 Ultra Luxury, and R999,900 for the 4×4 Overland.

The 3.0 Diesel model offers an impressive 385Nm of torque from just 1,000rpm, minimizing turbo lag and providing consistent power. It also comes equipped with GWM's in-house-developed nine-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system. The vehicle achieves an impressive fuel consumption rate of 8.6 litres per 100km during a media drive, which could potentially average around 10.0 litres per 100km for daily use.

For those who enjoy off-roading, the Tank 500 3.0 Diesel boasts a substantial 220mm ground clearance, 28.5-degree approach angle, 25-degree departure angle, and 25-degree breakover angle. It can handle depths of up to 800mm and has an increased towing capacity of up to 3.5 tons. The Overland variant even includes an auxiliary 53-litre tank.

Featuring the latest Coffee OS 3.0 infotainment and connectivity system, the Tank 500 3.0 Diesel offers a high level of standard equipment and safety features. These include a leather interior, a large digital cluster, a 14-inch infotainment system, a 360° camera, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, electric tailgate, LED lighting, and multi-terrain modes.
