Naqvi assails PTI's 'version of equality before law' after KP IG told to ensure speaker's approval for any MPA's arrest

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has vehemently opposed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's proposed legislation that requires assembly speaker's prior approval for an MPA's arrest or detention. Naqvi criticized this move, stating it contradicts the principle of "equality before law" and questioned the rationale behind it. He took issue with the KP Assembly Secretariat's letter to the Inspector General, demanding strict adherence to Section 11 of the KP Provincial Assembly (Powers, Immunities and Privileges) Act 2026.

This Act mandates that any arrest or detention of an MPA must receive the speaker's prior consent. Naqvi questioned the implications of such a rule, implying potential absurdities like police waiting for speaker's approval before arresting an MPA accused of a crime. The proposed law, yet to be passed by the assembly, would link the Inspector General's decisions to the Chief Minister's or the government's approval.

The development is set against the backdrop of a fierce debate over the new KP Police Act, with the interior ministry arguing it violates constitutional frameworks and undermines police command. The PTI, meanwhile, highlighted that their leaders and workers have been detained ahead of a nationwide protest slated for October 4th, alleging targeting by unidentified individuals by the KP cabinet members.
