The trial involving former FBI chief James Comey, accused of threatening President Donald Trump, will not commence before February 2027, following his recent postponement, according to Judge Louise Flanagan. The delay allowed the defense to address several relevant issues, including a request to dismiss the charges against Comey.

The trial's start was previously moved from July to October 2025. In May 2025, Comey posted a photo of seashells forming the numbers "86 47" on Instagram, a reference to Donald Trump, who is the 47th President of the United States. Trump's supporters interpreted this as an invitation for an assassination attempt on the President.

Comey denied that his post constituted a call to violence. The indictment now alleges that Comey intentionally spread a murder threat against Trump. According to Merriam-Webster, "86" is an outdated term first recorded in the 1930s, meaning something is sold out in a restaurant. It has since evolved to mean disapproving or dismissing something, and in rare cases, even to mean killing.

Comey claims he never intended to incite violence against Trump. Following public backlash, he deleted the post and later clarified on Instagram that he had only seen a political message in the seashell arrangement. Comey asserts he was unaware that some people associate these numbers with violence. Prosecutors will face the challenge of proving to the court that Comey had a clear intent to threaten Trump with violence. Witnesses claim Comey discovered the seashell numbers during a beach walk in May 2025.
