Mamata vows Opposition unity on demands for removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed on September 26, 2026, her support for Opposition unity against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Speaking at a public meeting in Serampore, West Bengal, Banerjee stated that she would support any party without considering political affiliations if there is a common cause for the people.

She emphasized that the INDIA bloc would hold a meeting in New Delhi on September 30 to discuss the matter. Banerjee also mentioned that Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary M.A. Baby had proposed broader Opposition unity against Kumar. She agreed to the proposal and expressed her intention to hold a meeting with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, as well as other regional parties, who may also participate.

Banerjee stressed that the Opposition would fight together for free and fair elections, irrespective of party colors. She highlighted that the entire nation is united against the issue of Kumar's conduct, and his days are numbered. Banerjee called for accountability, but also urged bringing those behind Kumar to justice. The concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, voter rights, and the Opposition's demand for accountability on behalf of the Chief Election Commissioner have united the Mamata AITC, CPI(M), and Congress.
