Malaysia ‘sick of’ veto blocking Gaza action, reiterates call for its abolition

Malaysia has expressed its frustration with the United Nations Security Council's use of the veto power to block efforts to address the Gaza conflict. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan stated that Malaysia is "sick of" the veto repeatedly hindering action on Gaza, despite calls for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and punitive measures against Israel.

The minister emphasized the need for reform within the Security Council, where the veto must be questioned and challenged by all members, particularly in cases of crimes against humanity. He highlighted the importance of utilizing General Assembly Resolution 76/262, adopted in 2022, to create an accountability channel between the Security Council and the General Assembly.

Malaysia also supports expanding the council's membership to make it more representative, but stresses that the veto itself must be abolished. The US has repeatedly used its veto to block several ceasefire resolutions in Gaza, most recently in June and September 2025. Mohamad emphasized that the UN must reform institutions to reflect current realities and ensure equal application of rules to all, reaffirming Malaysia's commitment to multilateralism despite its imperfections.
