KAA steps up JKIA flood preparedness as El Niño threat looms

Nairobi, Kenya - The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has intensified its preparations for potential flooding and other operational disruptions at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as El Niño weather conditions approach. The authority is testing emergency vehicles, communication systems, and conducting blackout assessments to ensure JKIA's resilience and safeguard users and the surrounding community.

During a stakeholder briefing, KAA's Managing Director, Moses Wekesa, revealed that the measures include drainage clearance, infrastructure inspections, and working with Haskoning Engineering via the Netherlands government to pilot Early Warning Systems. These efforts form a proactive approach to maintain airport operations and minimize risks to passengers, staff, and the community during adverse weather.
