Ireland squad vote to play Israel tie despite Gaza unease

The Irish national football team has decided to play their Nations League tie against Israel in Serbia, despite concerns over security and unease following the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The match, originally scheduled for Dublin's Aviva Stadium on October 4th, has been moved to Backa Topola, Serbia. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was the only player to withdraw from the team due to his personal beliefs on the matter.

Ireland has a history of supporting the Palestinian cause, but the decision to proceed with the match was made with a significant majority of the squad. The Irish Football Association (FAI) stated that the team would continue with the fixtures, as they had always intended to do. Bazunu's decision sparked protests from prominent Irish figures, including sportspeople and fan groups, who advocated for the separation of football and politics.

The players will wear black armbands during the match in Serbia and profits from another upcoming match will be donated to charity. Ireland's national broadcaster, RTE, has also decided to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest next year due to Israel's participation.
