Iran proposes deal to reopen Strait of Hormuz in 7 days if US meets conditions

Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restarting nuclear talks with the United States within seven days, contingent upon the US lifting its naval blockade, waiving sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and observing a ceasefire. The proposal, shared with reporters by Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, would kick off the seven-day timeline as soon as the US accepts it.

Araghchi stated that initial steps to reopen the strait would take four to five days, with the reopening occurring on the sixth day. Talks with the US to address Iran's nuclear program would commence on the seventh day. Iran's strait blockade, which once allowed a fifth of the world's traded oil and gas to pass through, has been a key leverage point and has posed challenges for the US ahead of the midterm elections.

The White House noted positive and constructive conversations between US officials and mediators regarding the Iran conflict, but declined to comment on the proposal. Saudi Arabia, however, indicated skepticism towards the deal. The proposal echoes a June interim agreement but with an accelerated timeline, as Iran's latest offer includes a 60-day regionwide ceasefire, a point not seen in the previous arrangement.
