India, Chile to start talks for comprehensive trade pact: PM

India and Chile have commenced discussions on a "mutually beneficial and comprehensive" trade pact, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement was made after state-owned copper mining firms from both nations signed an agreement aimed at expanding Chile's access to the Indian mining market. The talks come amid current international disputes, which Modi emphasized should be resolved peacefully through dialogue.

During the event in Hyderabad House, the two countries signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and an agreement for cooperation and exchange of information between CODELCO and Hindustan Copper Limited. This agreement, which Secretary P. Kumaran noted will support joint activities, including strategic partnerships in exploration and mineral beneficiation, could help Chile reduce its reliance on the Chinese market for copper.

Modi highlighted India's readiness to share expertise in various sectors, such as digital public infrastructure, renewable energy, railways, and space exploration. He also described Chile as the "gateway to Antarctica," noting the signing of a letter of intent to deepen cooperation in exploring the region.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric arrived in India earlier that day and met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Boric expressed his pleasure at Chile's acceptance of Yoga as part of a healthy lifestyle, pointing out that November 4 has been designated as the country's national Yoga day. Boric also mentioned that India and Chile aim to increase cooperation on international issues and disputes, despite challenges with neighboring countries like Peru and Argentina.

Chile has faced disputes with neighboring nations and took a firm stance against Russia's military campaign against Ukraine, condemning Russia's actions and participating in a peace summit in Switzerland the previous June. All sides agreed that international disputes should be resolved through dialogue and that reforms in the UN Security Council are necessary to address such crises.
