'India calls for restraint': EAM on ship attacks in Gulf, seafarers at UNGA

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, urging for restraint amidst ongoing attacks on commercial ships and seafarers in the Gulf region during the Iran-US conflict. He emphasized the disproportionate impact on countries distant from the conflict yet suffering from the consequences.

Jaishankar highlighted the need for all parties to de-escalate tensions, protect civilians, and maintain the smooth flow of energy and commerce. He also criticized Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for misleading the assembly with arguments that normalize terrorism and claim immunity from its consequences. Jaishankar reiterated India's stance against terrorism and its commitment to defending against it.

The minister underscored the necessity for a two-state solution in West Asia to achieve lasting peace. India remains committed to addressing the security of seafarers and the supply of food, grains, and energy amid escalating tensions and violence in the region.
