Gunner Rivers, son of former NFL QB Phillip Rivers, gives injury update

Gunner Rivers, son of former NFL quarterback Phillip Rivers, provided an update on his injury situation. After three highly productive seasons, expectations were high for him to break multiple Alabama high school passing records in the 2026 season. However, a knee injury sustained during St. Michael Catholic's season opener against Battle Ground Academy has sidelined him for the last four weeks.

Despite this setback, there is hope for his return this season as per a tweet from AL.com’s Randy Kennedy. Gunner had been one of six Alabama quarterbacks to throw for over 10,000 yards in their careers and had started regularly as a freshman, throwing over 3,000 yards each year. Entering his senior year, he had accumulated 10,425 yards and 113 touchdowns.

In the Cardinals' season opener, he completed 4 of 5 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, but the injury occurred in the second quarter. The Cardinals have had a mixed season, starting with three consecutive losses but bouncing back with a 39-35 win against St. Paul’s Episcopal. Their best performance of the season was a 37-19 victory against Bayside Academy.

With five games remaining, four of which will be at home, they are set to host Faith Academy on October 2.
