Govt launches initiative to boost defence literacy among Malaysians

The Malaysian government has introduced the National Defence Literacy Programme to enhance public awareness and understanding of security, defence, and sovereignty matters. Defence Minister Khaled Nordin inaugurated the initiative at the Sabah International Convention Centre today, with the program initially targeting the Bornean state before nationwide expansion.

The program aims to foster public resilience, which has become increasingly vital in the face of evolving threats beyond traditional security challenges. Khaled emphasized that strengthening the people's resilience is crucial, as it contributes to credible defence and deterrence.

According to the minister, safeguarding the nation's sovereignty is no longer solely the responsibility of the armed forces; it now extends to the entire Malaysian society. Defence literacy, encompassing awareness, knowledge, and skills, is essential for citizens to comprehend the rationale behind defence-related policies and decisions.

This knowledge is vital to prevent Malaysians from being misled by propaganda or provocation, especially with the rise of threats through social media and other digital platforms. The minister highlighted that digital devices and platforms can pose potential risks to the country's sovereignty if not used responsibly.

The National Defence Literacy Programme will commence with various community activities at the grassroots level, organized by the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security and the National Defence University of Malaysia.
