Ghana, Germany deepen cooperation on railways, labour mobility

Ghana and Germany have strengthened their cooperation in various areas, including railway infrastructure, economic relations, labor mobility, and cultural heritage. The discussions occurred during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa met with Germany's Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Johann Wadephul. The meeting aimed to enhance relations and cooperation between the two nations in areas of mutual interest.

Railway infrastructure and engineering were key topics discussed, as Ghana seeks strategic partners to revamp its rail transport system. The two ministers also explored economic cooperation opportunities, including potential expansions for German companies in Ghana. Migration and labor mobility were discussed, with the two sides following up on negotiations towards structured labor exchange programs that would provide legal pathways for skilled Ghanaian workers to access employment opportunities in Germany.

Both countries agreed on the need to address the underlying factors contributing to irregular migration, emphasizing the role of skills development, education, and employment opportunities in resolving these causal factors. Additionally, the minister praised Germany's engagement on Ghana's reparatory justice agenda.
