Germany Implements Fuel Rebate

In Germany, fuel costs have reached record levels. At a Berlin gas station, diesel was priced at 2.55 Euro per liter, E10 gasoline at 2.38, and high-octane super at 2.49 Euro. This equates to around 10 to 11 U.S. Dollars per gallon, depending on the type of fuel. The German government has introduced a fuel rebate in both chambers of parliament, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, to provide relief to citizens.

The rebate will lower the energy tax by 14 Euro Cents per liter, resulting in a 17 Cent decrease in price. Despite this reduction, diesel will still be 2.38 Euro per liter, E10 fuel 2.21, and high-octane Super fuel 2.32 Euro. This rebate will save drivers enough to purchase an additional 2.5 liters of fuel, enough to drive between 25 and 50 kilometers (15 to 31 miles), depending on the type of vehicle.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's administration also intends to set a price cap on fuel, considering various factors such as crude oil prices, storage costs, transportation costs, insurance costs, and profit margins. This part of the package will apply starting January 1st, while the crisis in the Middle East persists. The rebate will be in effect from October 1st to the end of the year, with the possibility of implementing "targeted measures" if fuel prices do not improve significantly.

The relief package, added to another bill, will take effect within days if there are no objections from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It's worth noting that similar measures have been implemented in the past, but issues arose when oil companies did not fully pass on the rebate to consumers. It remains to be seen if this will be the case this time as well.

The relief package will cost 2.5 billion Euro (2.85 billion Dollars or 2.15 billion Pounds), to be covered by the federal government and Germany's federal states.
