Former vineyard turned into sanctuary for endangered birds

In South Australia's Riverland region, a former vineyard spanning 40 acres has been transformed into a sanctuary for endangered birds, particularly the regent parrot. The Townsend family, who previously operated a vineyard for eight harvests, decided to restore their property to its natural state in 2022. The decision was driven by the decline of the regent parrot population, which has been struggling due to a lack of nesting sites.

The Townsend property is situated along a flight path for the regent parrot, making it an ideal location for their reintroduction. The South Australian Regent Parrot Recovery Team has been consulted to attract and boost the parrot population. While the process of revegetation is ongoing and expected to take time, the Townsend family hopes their efforts will benefit future generations and contribute to the conservation of the endangered species.
