Florence Brunelle wins double gold at Canadian short track speedskating championships

Florence Brunelle secured two gold medals at the Canadian short track speedskating championships on Friday. The Trois-Rivières, Que., native triumphed in the women’s 1,000 metres, clocking in at 1:31.935, just ahead of Courtney Sarault, who was disqualified for a kick at the finish. Danaé Blais of Châteauguay, Que., took silver with a time of 1:32.595, while Kiera Pagé of Saint-Félicien, Que., won bronze with a time of 1:53.263.

Brunelle continued her dominance by winning the second 1,500 metres race in 2:30.640. Ann-Sophie Bachand of Sherbrooke, Que., earned silver with a time of 2:30.936, and Claudia Gagnon of La Baie, Que., claimed bronze with a time of 2:31.021.

In the men’s competition, Félix Roussel of Sherbrooke, Que., secured his third consecutive gold by winning the 1,000 metres. Roussel, 25, clocked in at 1:25.165, beating Mathieu Pelletier of Laval, Que., at 1:25.250 and Maxime Laoun of Montreal at 1:25.348. However, Montreal’s William Dandjinou ended Roussel’s pursuit of four golds by winning the second 1,500 in 2:21.208, finishing at 2:21.377. Alexandre Migner of Sainte-Julie, Que., placed third with a time of 2:21.476.
