El-Rufai paying for ‘misdeeds’ while in power – Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has said that if Atiku Abubakar wins the 2027 presidential election, Nigeria will likely see an end to the informal principle of rotational presidency. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today, Sani argued that while Atiku has the constitutional right to contest the election, political considerations should determine the outcome of the 2027 contest.

Sani proposed that the South should be allowed to have an eight-year presidential tenure before power returns to the North, mirroring the North's control from 2015 to 2023. He urged political parties to field candidates from the South, including Peter Obi for the NDC and Makinde for the APM, to ensure a fair and competitive election process.

Sani emphasized that the principle of rotational presidency, though not explicitly stated in the Constitution, should be considered for the sake of justice, fairness, and national unity. He noted that Nigeria's political system is currently grappling with various crises and that a northern president succeeding President Bola Tinubu in 2027 might face opposition in the South.
