Demi Vollering wins cycling road race world title

Montreal: Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering claimed the prestigious women's road race world title in Montreal on Saturday, triumphing in a nail-biting finish against Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney. Italian Elisa Longo Borghini secured bronze by edging out Swiss rider Marlen Reusser by four seconds. Vollering's exceptional year included victories in the Tour de France Femmes, Giro d'Italia Women, and four prestigious one-day classics: Tour of Flanders, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, and La Fleche Wallonne Femmes.

Despite a bold solo attack with 39km remaining, Vollering was unable to capitalize, being caught 12km from the finish. The decisive moment unfolded as Vollering and Niewiadoma-Phinney engaged in a strategic cat-and-mouse battle in the final 200 meters, while Longo Borghini relentlessly pursued. Niewiadoma-Phinney launched her sprint just before the final stretch, but Vollering out-kicked her.

Longo Borghini finished four seconds behind Vollering, with Reusser rounding out the podium eight seconds behind the winner.
