Cheng Hoe demands focus ahead of Indonesia showdown

Jakarta: Interim Harimau Malaya head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has just 48 hours to revitalize his team, pinpoint tactical weaknesses and devise a winning strategy prior to their clash against hosts Indonesia on Monday. A commanding 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in their Group A opener at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) stadium marked a promising start.

Cheng Hoe, however, is insistent that a sense of complacency cannot infiltrate the team. Instead, the short turnaround is aimed at ensuring Malaysia is fully prepared to face an Indonesian side that also claimed their opening match.

"Our focus is on getting the players to an optimal state of readiness and recovery. At the same time, the medical team needs to evaluate who is available and who isn't," Cheng Hoe explained. While the physical recuperation is crucial, the coaching staff is scrutinizing their opener against Bangladesh and crafting tactical plans for Indonesia.

Although the result was easily secured, Cheng Hoe recognized areas for enhancement, particularly in maintaining possession and transitions. "We need to analyze how we played against Bangladesh and, at the same time, break down Indonesia's game. We are ready to compete," he affirmed, praising new additions Bergson da Silva, Manuel Hidalgo and Brad Tapp for infusing the squad with essential energy, depth and confidence.

Debutant Manuel Hidalgo, a naturalized forward, expressed Malaysia's self-assurance, asserting that the team will not be intimidated by Indonesia's strong reputation or the fervent support from their fans. "Indonesia are a very strong team. Nobody can deny that, but so is Malaysia. So I believe in our chances," Hidalgo stated, playing a pivotal role in the Bangladesh match.

Having spent years in Malaysia, Hidalgo believes the team chemistry is already flourishing. "I know the quality they have. They are fantastic players. It's always about team bonding, and I feel the best is yet to come," he added, emphasizing that representing his country is an emotional milestone. "Malaysia has given me everything, so being able to give back is amazing. I'm exhausted, but very happy."

Debutant Bergson da Silva, who arrived in Malaysia in 2021 with Johor Darul Ta zim (JDT) and secured FIFA eligibility on September 13, marked his international debut with a goal against Bangladesh. The 35-year-old Brazilian striker has immersed himself so deeply into local life that fans have endearingly dubbed him "Ahmad Bergson." "Truly Ahmad Bergson now, right?" he quipped humorously. "I feel like a Malaysian. I am so touched by the love they have shown me, and I want to repay it on the pitch."
