Bazunu: 'I feel it would be wrong to participate'

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has announced his withdrawal from the squad, citing his opposition to participating in the upcoming fixture against Israel due to the atrocities taking place in the region. The decision to have Bazunu boycott the game led to a four-hour debate among the players at their team hotel, resulting in a majority vote to proceed with the match.

The Bolton Wanderers player emphasized his respect for his teammates, management, and the Irish people, stating that his decision was not aimed at opposing the Israeli people or Jewish community but rather against the atrocities occurring in the region. He explained that his stance was deeply rooted in his faith and commitment to standing for what he believed was right.

Despite the controversy surrounding the fixture, Ireland's match against Israel in Debrecen is set to take place, albeit with the possibility of a largely-empty stadium, as the Israel Football Association has sold only 150 tickets to supporters. The FAI has confirmed that 100 complimentary tickets have been distributed to journalists, contractual commitments, and others, while a limited number have been made available to local football fans.

The capacity of the Nagyerdei Stadium is 20,340. The Irish team will wear black armbands and make a significant donation to charity in recognition of the lives lost in the conflict.
