Bangkok battered by heavy rain as flooding disrupts life

Bangkok has been officially designated a disaster zone following intense rainfall that triggered extensive flooding across the Thai capital. The nation's meteorological department predicts further thunderstorms in the area. Authorities report that major thoroughfares were inundated, and vehicles became submerged as residents were compelled to navigate through water up to their waist.

Nearly 300mm of rain fell in a 48-hour period, prompting Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to warn the situation poses a grave threat to lives and may cause significant damage to both public and private property. The most acute situation emerged near canals, he added.

The Thai military pledged to establish shelters and field kitchens to support relief endeavors, while the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has converted schools into temporary lodgings for affected individuals and advised residents to avoid non-essential travel. Supermarkets have been bustling with customers stocking up on essentials.

A local resident expressed concern, stating, "I am equally worried because I have not adequately prepared food beforehand and have never encountered such a predicament alone before, as my parents are not with me."

The government issued an emergency advisory on Saturday urging individuals residing near canals to relocate personal belongings to higher ground. Bangkok resident Suppakarn Julavijitphong admitted, "I was not sufficiently aware to contemplate moving before the warning was issued." Despite the airport's normal operations, the tourism authority urged travelers to allocate an additional two to three hours for their passage through the hub.

Thailand faced its most severe floods in decades in November, during which at least 145 people perished, and thousands of homes sustained damage in the southern regions of the country.
