‘Avengers: Endgame’ Snapping Up $26M at Box Office Amid Crowded Weekend

Disney/Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Endgame Encore" grabbed the top spot on the box office charts during a busy weekend with new films, earning $11.2 million from 3,060 locations on Friday, with industry estimates predicting a $26 million weekend. This will bring the Marvel film's lifetime domestic gross to $884 million, putting it within $100 million of the all-time global box office record held by "Avatar".

Sony/TriStar's "Resident Evil" came in second with $23.8 million in its second weekend, a 60% drop from its $60 million opening. A24's "Primetime" and Paramount's "Heart of the Beast" are competing for the third spot, with "Primetime" opening at $8.5 million and a $20.5 million weekend from 2,874 locations. "Heart of the Beast" opened at $7.4 million from 3,435 locations, heading for a $20 million opening.

While "Primetime" has received Oscar buzz and generally positive reviews, some viewers are turned off by its more incisive look at true crime television, earning a B on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 87% critics and 82% audience. Despite its higher budget, "Heart of the Beast" is still a potential theatrical success, but it will face challenges turning a profit.
