Drivers of Volkswagen models may need to visit a workshop twice following a multi-million recall. The recall concerns corrosion at a steering column fastening screw. Initially, there might not be a sufficient quantity of the prescribed screw available for the start of the action, leading to the possibility of using a different screw temporarily.

According to internal workshop information on spare part availability, received by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the recall would remain incomplete until the correct screw becomes available, and vehicles would need to be re-registered at the workshop. A Volkswagen spokesperson described this as a "sensible approach" to ensure that repaired cars are not driven without necessary repairs, even if the correct screw is temporarily unavailable.

The number of vehicles affected by the recall is currently unknown, but in Germany, it is estimated at 895,000 VW models, worldwide around 2.1 million. Bund States data shows at least 950,000 cars from the VW, Audi and Seat subsidiaries recall. This includes the VW models Tiguan, Touran, Golf Variant, Golf Sportsvan and Caddy from September 2013 to July 2024.

The repair process takes up to an hour. Recalls also occurred for Audi and Seat models Ateca and Tarraco from April 2016 to September 2024, whose number was initially undisclosed. The issue can also arise in the Audi Q3 model produced between October 2017 and May 2024, with almost 700,000 vehicles potentially affected worldwide, including about 58,500 in Germany.

Audi stated: "So far, there have been no cases of personal or further damage related to this issue."
