(Asiad) Men's fencing team, women's basketball team snatch gold medals; gamers capture 1st title

NAGOYA, Japan - South Korea claimed three gold medals on Saturday as the first week of competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games concluded, bringing the nation's total to 16 medals with eight days remaining in the Games. Fencer Oh Sang-uk orchestrated a dramatic comeback to win the men's sabre team event, dragging his team to victory in the country's fourth consecutive gold in the sport.

In women's basketball, South Korea defeated Japan 75-70 for their first gold in 12 years, with Lee Hae-ran leading the charge with 24 points and nine rebounds. South Korea also secured its first esports gold medal of the Games, with a 5-2 victory over Japan in the fighting games final, including wins in both matches of the King of Fighters XV.

Earlier in the day, Kang Dong-shin took silver in puzzle game Puyo Puyo Champions. South Korea's fencing team secured silver in women's foil after losing to Japan 29-28 in the final. In kayaking, Jang Sang-won and Choi Min-kyu/Seon Min-ju finished second and third, respectively, in the mixed kayak double 500m. On the diving front, Kim Na-hyun and Moon Na-yun brought home bronze with a score of 276.90.

Kim Ji-eun added a bronze in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event. In baseball, South Korea beat China 9-2 in the Super Round, setting up a gold medal match against Japan on Sunday. South Korea could also capture their first men's handball title since 2010 after defeating China 32-26 in the quarterfinals. The women's handball team maintained their winning streak with a 46-18 win over Vietnam.
