Ashanti Region launches Taekwondo awareness programme to promote youth development

The Ashanti Region in Ghana recently launched the Regional Taekwondo Awareness Programme (RTAP) to boost youth development through the sport of Taekwondo. The launch took place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on September 25, organized by the Ghana Taekwondo Federation in partnership with the National Sports Authority, Ghana Olympic Committee, Ghana National Council of Private Schools, and the Ashanti Taekwondo Association.

The event's theme emphasized promoting Taekwondo awareness, discipline, fitness, and youth development.

RTAP's main objective is to attract more young people to Taekwondo by highlighting its benefits beyond competitive sport. According to Frederick L. Otu, President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, early exposure to the sport can instill discipline, confidence, fitness, and respect for others. The Ghana National Council of Private Schools' President and National Coordinator, Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, stressed the role of schools in expanding Taekwondo's reach, calling for better collaboration between schools, sports federations, and other stakeholders to provide more opportunities for students.

Nana Gyaama Dakwa, the Ashanti Regional Director of the National Sports Authority, highlighted the importance of investing in Taekwondo and other non-traditional sports to broaden the sporting landscape in the region. Edward Akanzu-Ise, Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools – Ashanti, emphasized that Taekwondo can complement academic development by fostering concentration, discipline, and physical fitness.

The event featured a demonstration by Ashanti Taekwondo Association athletes showcasing Poomsae, sparring, basic techniques, and self-defense. The demonstrations offered participants a practical understanding of Taekwondo's skills, discipline, and physical conditioning. Hon. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, officially launched the RTAP, aligning with efforts to increase awareness and participation in Taekwondo while forging stronger connections between sports and education.

The launch concluded with a group photograph and media engagement, bringing together officials, athletes, coaches, and other stakeholders.
