AI-bruken øker: – Vi må ta advarslene på alvor

Use of AI tools in Norwegian households has surged from 54% to 69% since last year, according to statistics from Statistics Norway (SSB). The digitalization minister, Torgeir Micaelsen, expressed satisfaction that both individuals and businesses are increasingly embracing AI, as it could unlock the potential benefits of the technology.

Micaelsen emphasized the need for higher productivity, greater value creation, and improved services in both the public and private sectors, highlighting AI as the most potent technology to achieve these goals.

Recent anxiety surrounding AI intensified following remarks by Evan Hubinger, a research leader at Anthropic, who warned that "we seriously believe that artificial intelligence could kill all humans." In response, leaders from Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX, including Dario Amodei and Elon Musk, have called for a slowdown in AI development. Independent researchers have also voiced concerns about the accelerating pace of AI innovation.

Micaelsen stressed that policymakers must now take charge and control AI development, particularly following a proposal at the recent UN summit in New York. 22 world leaders signed the proposal, urging the regulation of the potentially dangerous aspects of AI while harnessing its positive effects. Micaelsen pointed to the need for political action to take the "ugly" parts of AI under control while reaping the benefits of this advanced technology.

He suggested that Norway could lead the way by creating "KI Norway," a project dedicated to responsibly deploying AI and promoting AI security.
