AFCON qualifiers: Why Ademola Lookman failed to perform against Madagascar – Chelle

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle provided insight into why Ademola Lookman underperformed in Nigeria's 2-1 victory over Madagascar in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match. Initially, Chelle fielded Lookman in a 4-4-2 formation, using him to create opportunities between the lines. However, as the game progressed, Chelle shifted to a 4-2-3-1 system, recognizing the need to exploit the flanks to break through Madagascar's low defensive block.

Chelle explained that against such a structure, teams must force their opponents to pass wide before attempting an inside pass. The coach acknowledged that Lookman had difficulty adapting to this game plan, as he was not physically present to make real-time adjustments. Despite Lookman's inability to contribute meaningfully, debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored to secure the win for Nigeria.
