6 million citizens registered under PM’s fuel relief scheme: Shaza Fatima

Federal Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced on Friday that approximately 5.91 million citizens have registered for the Prime Minister's Fuel Relief Scheme since its inception. She stated that 4.79 million fuel relief tokens generated under the scheme have been successfully redeemed.

Addressing a news conference alongside Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, Khawaja clarified that the five-litre fuel limit for motorcycles, rickshaws, and Qingqi vehicles, previously in place, has been removed. The ownership requirement for motorcycle and rickshaw users has also been waived for those using rented vehicles.

Khawaja explained that the fuel relief scheme aims to provide direct and targeted assistance to citizens most impacted by rising fuel costs due to volatility in global oil markets following regional tensions in the Middle East. The scheme covers eligible two- and three-wheelers, including motorcycles, Qingqi, and rickshaws, as well as cars up to 800cc.

She displayed a live dashboard showcasing the total registrations, tokens generated and redeemed, along with a provincial breakdown of the figures. A 24/7 control room at the IT and Telecommunication Ministry is overseeing the scheme's implementation to ensure transparency and timely resolution of issues. Provincial governments and their administrations are actively monitoring the program's progress, with daily meetings held to oversee implementation. Khawaja personally visited petrol stations facing difficulties and observed the scheme's rollout. The government is conducting awareness campaigns, using media outlets to reach more citizens, especially those affected by higher petrol prices.

The minister also addressed concerns regarding older motorcycles, noting minimal cases involving vehicles registered before 2006. She assured that most targeted individuals are receiving the subsidy, and petrol pumps are being paid within a 24-hour cycle.
