16 dead over 24 hours as Ukraine, Russia trade strikes

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Europe of obstructing efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine following a surge in strikes that left 16 dead within 24 hours. The escalation comes after the deadliest summer since 2022, marking the beginning of Europe's worst war since World War II. Lavrov, who met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York, directed his criticism at Europe, alleging it was actively hindering peace talks supported by the US administration.

He stated during a UN General Assembly speech, "Europe is doing everything it can to thwart peace talks in which the Trump administration is interested." Russian and Ukrainian strikes resulted in at least 16 fatalities over the past day, with Kyiv attributing the deaths to Russian attacks in several regions and Russia claiming Ukrainian strikes caused four deaths in its Krasnodar and Belgorod regions.

Kremlin-backed officials in occupied southern Ukraine reported an additional six deaths. United Nations officials have expressed concern over the rising number of civilian casualties. Despite US-led talks aimed at ending the war, no breakthrough has been achieved, and Moscow continues its push for the annexation of eastern Ukraine.

The Russian president's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Moscow would persist in its military campaign until its objectives were met.
