Zambia’s Maamba solar project begins power delivery to grid

Zambia's Maamba Solar PV Project commenced feeding electricity into the national power grid on September 24, 2026, signaling the start of its commissioning process. Operated by Maamba Solar Energy Limited, a joint venture with ZCCM-IH holding a 35% share and Nava Global PTE Limited owning the remaining 65%, the facility is situated in Maamba, Sinazongwe District, Southern Province.

The solar installation comprises bifacial PV modules on single-axis trackers and a dedicated 330 kV substation for grid connection. The $90 million project, as reported by a press release, is set to be purchased by ZESCO Limited under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement. Commissioning involves testing and verification of various systems, including PV generation, tracking, inverters, medium-voltage collection, substation, protection, metering, SCADA, and grid-interconnection facilities.

Upon reaching full commercial operation, the project aims to provide 100 megawatts of solar capacity, timely addressing Zambia's energy security concerns as the nation anticipates the impacts of impending El Niño. ZCCM-IH, the project's operator, is listed on the Lusaka Securities Exchange and has secondary listings on the London Stock Exchange and Euronext Access Exchange in Paris.
