Xi says US and China must act as responsible powers as Trump toasts friendship at White House dinner

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump will be taking Chinese President Xi Jinping to the National Archives in Washington D.C. to showcase the nation's most revered documents to the leader of the world's largest communist nation. This marks the conclusion of a three-day state visit that has been criticized for emphasizing ceremony over substantive discussions.

Xi is set to leave Washington after a tour of the country's archives, which house the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Despite efforts to foster goodwill between the world's two largest economies, no major progress was made on issues such as trade and artificial intelligence regulation. However, Xi has stated that he anticipates meeting Trump two additional times this year.

He has extended an invitation for Trump and his wife, Melania, to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, in November. Xi also mentioned that they could convene again a month later at the G20 summit held at the Trump National Doral golf club in Florida. Xi expressed his eagerness to welcome the Trumps to China.
