World : Singapore SFA Probes Alleged Illegal Dog Meat Sale On Social Media

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is investigating allegations of illegal sales of dog meat in Singapore, following a social media post on the Facebook group Dogs Singapore. The post allegedly featured an advertisement in Vietnamese, offering various cuts of dog meat for sale. However, the post was subsequently deleted.

According to the SFA, the agency has not authorized any source of dog meat in Singapore. All food imports, including meat and meat products, must comply with the SFA's requirements. The SFA emphasizes that illegally imported food products from unknown sources can pose a significant food safety risk.

Meat and meat products can only be imported by licensed importers, and these imports must come from sources accredited by the SFA. Selling meat and meat products that have been imported without a valid license or import permit is an offense, punishable by fines of up to S$50,000 (approximately US$39,000), imprisonment for up to two years, or both.

The SFA highlights that food safety is a "joint responsibility," requiring both importers and retailers to ensure that food products brought into Singapore for sale adhere to SFA import requirements and are safe for consumption. The agency encourages members of the public to report any concerns about food safety practices through its online feedback form.
