World can’t be governed by 1945 power structure in 2026 — Tinubu tells UN

President Bola Tinubu has called for significant reforms to the United Nations, emphasizing that the current Security Council structure, established in 1945, no longer accurately represents modern global realities. Speaking at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Tinubu argued that Africa must be granted permanent representation on the Security Council, with at least two permanent seats, including veto powers, in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.

He stressed that the authority to speak for humanity obliges the United Nations to accurately reflect global representation. Tinubu also urged world leaders to prioritize diplomacy, cooperation, and international law over coercion and isolation, warning that the global order is under serious strain due to ongoing conflicts. Nigeria, he highlighted, remains committed to peacekeeping missions and sustainable development, emphasizing that policies improving lives are crucial for earning public trust.
