Wirtschaftspolitik: Standort Deutschland: BDI fordert neue Prioritäten

The German industry association, the Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie (BDI), has called for new priorities in economic policy amidst the crisis and reform debate. They argue that Germany and Europe should reduce their dependence on China more consistently. The BDI acknowledges the need for a transformation in the economy to combat climate change but also calls for short-term assistance.

The BDI's "Principles of Economic and Trade Policy" document is not a day-to-day demand but a shared guideline for the 38 member associations, representing approximately 100,000 individual enterprises. BDI Managing Director Tanja Gönner emphasizes the importance of this position for the German industry in the coming years, stating that "The location of Germany is under massive pressure."

Therefore, she believes, "New economic policy shifts in many fields are required." The BDI outlines several demands, including returning to fiscal discipline in the public sector and not relaxing the debt brake in the Basic Law, reducing labor and energy costs, adjusting the tax burden, diversifying sources of raw materials, and increasing recycling capacity in Europe.

They also call for a transition to a climate-neutral economy, short-term relief measures, and a "flexibilization of the German and European climate architecture." The BDI advocates for more digital computing power in Germany and greater emphasis on the development and market introduction of AI technology. They stress the importance of protecting their own interests in relations with China, urging for a "self-confident, interest-driven European positioning" even towards the USA.
